Jacob Report #2 – The Wall

It was September 11, 2011, the 10th anniversary of the successful attack upon the USA by 19 Arab terrorists at the direction of Osama bin Laden.  I was in Berlin, Germany for an international conference of Messianic Jewish alliances-the IMJA.  I serve on the AdCom -the administrative committee.  On 9/11, I visited Die Mauer Museum, “the wall Museum” located on Friedrich Strasse.  It is a museum to the erection, history and eventually eradication of the Berlin wall.  The museum was originally built across the street from the Berlin wall and checkpoint Charlie.  It was built as a teaching tool, bringing attention to the plight of imprisoned East Germans and in fact, all of the captive Soviet peoples.

A number of the Wall museum’s exhibits celebrate the many, some quite original, techniques undertaken by East Germans to escape the constraints imposed by the wall; a woman who folded herself up in a suitcase and was carried out as luggage; tunnels under and through construction sites; a hot air balloon which carried two entire families to freedom in the West.  Countless ingenious methods to get out of the East and into the West, always at great risk to life and limb.  The museum proudly displays artifacts of many of those successful episodes; pieces of the balloon and basket, old rusted autos which crashed the barrier, the actual suitcase which held the woman, etc.

The visit was very emotional for me, I admit.  As a believer, it provoked a cascade of thoughts from the perspective of a follower of Messiah Yeshua.  These thoughts are the subject of this Jacob Report.

Walls-some are built to keep people out, while others are built to keep people in.  The walls of a prison are clearly intended to keep prisoners in.  The great wall of China was built to keep the invading hordes out.  We employ a “firewall” to protect our personal computer data from hackers (hopefully).

Walls can serve as a symbol, a dividing line.  The Berlin wall is the classic forcible separation of a city and a nation.  The Berlin wall will forever be recognized as the symbol of the Cold War, separating communists from capitalists, democracy from totalitarianism, West from East, freedom from tyranny.  There are many biblical stories which center on events at or surrounding a wall.  Jericho’s wall was intended to prevent the entry of the Israelis.  The wall collapsed and conquest ensued.  Abimelech, the first (self-declared) king in Israel assaulted a rebellious city of Shechem.  (Judges 9).  He came too close to the wall and a woman threw a millstone, crushing his skull and ending his reign.

Great Wall of ChinaFollowing the defeat of Absalom, Sheba, a “worthless fellow” 2 Samuel 20:1-attempted to start another rebellion.  David dispatched Joab who pursued said Sheba into the walled city of Abel, which Joab commenced to lay a siege to when a wise old woman came to the wall and called to Joab.  Once the wise old woman ascertained the cities fate depended upon the delivery of the rebel Sheba-she convinced the elders of Abel to throw the head of Sheba over the wall to Joab and thus ended the rebellion and the city was saved.

Saul, the recent new follower of Messiah Yeshua who became Paul, was lowered over the wall in a basket thus saving him from those who found his new faith dangerous to traditional Judaism.

Then there is the absence of walls as described by the prophet Ezekiel.

Ezekiel 38:10-11 (NASB)
10 ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “It will come about on that day, that thoughts will come into your mind and you will devise an evil plan,
11 and you will say, ‘I will go up against the land of unwalled villages. I will go against those who are at rest, that live securely, all of them living without walls and having no bars or gates,

The unwalled cities of Israel seem to present an inviting target, and inducement to the wicked leader of Gog.  Clearly this speaks of another era and is just one of many reasons I maintain the predicted battle of Gog and Magog is fought, as Revelation 20:8-9 states, after the thousand year reign of Messiah upon the earth.  Certainly there will not be a time this side of Messiah’s return when walls of defense are not required throughout the territory of Israel.

Revelation 21:10-21 (NASB)
10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,
11 having the glory of God. Her brilliance was like a very costly stone, as a stone of crystal-clear jasper.
12 It had a great and high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names were written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel.
13 There were three gates on the east and three gates on the north and three gates on the south and three gates on the west.
14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15 The one who spoke with me had a gold measuring rod to measure the city, and its gates and its wall.
16 The city is laid out as a square, and its length is as great as the width; and he measured the city with the rod, fifteen hundred miles; its length and width and height are equal.
17 And he measured its wall, seventy-two yards, according to human measurements, which are also angelic measurements.
18 The material of the wall was jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass.
19 The foundation stones of the city wall were adorned with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation stone was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, emerald;
20 the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst.
21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

Revelation 22:14-15 (NASB)
14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city.
15 Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the immoral persons and the murderers and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying.

This is one wall you clearly want to have permission to enter.  This wall is intended to keep out the uninvited.

Wall of Separation – Jerusalem & Judea-Samaria

Jerusalem Seperation WallThere is another wall, already erected, which I suspect has potentially imminent prophetic significance.  The wall in question follows most of the border of Israel and the West Bank, a.k.a. the “occupied territories” a.k.a. Judea and Samaria.  It also incorporates much of the historic city of Jerusalem.

The stated purpose for the walls construction was to intercept the free passage of would-be terrorists and suicide bombers.  The wall coincidently separates Israel from what is coveted by the nations for a “Palestinian” state.  The net effect of this wall is to “separate” most of Judea and Jerusalem from Israel.  Only the most ideological Israelis-the “settlers” dare to venture into this historic land of David.  Previously these settlers have supported mostly right leaning Israeli politicians and political parties which, come election time, make commitments for the eternal unity of this ancient land of Judea with the greater Israel.

I believe a case can be made consistent with scriptural prophecy that the wall in question will be a critical part of what will be a siege of both Jerusalem and Judea.  Those committed settlers will one day soon wake up on the “wrong” side of the wall, cut off from all material support and surrounded by hostile neighbors looking for revenge.

Zechariah 12:1-3 (NASB)
1 The burden of the word of the LORD concerning Israel. Thus declares the LORD who stretches out the heavens, lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him,
2 “Behold, I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that causes reeling to all the peoples around; and when the siege is against Jerusalem, it will also be against Judah.
3 “It will come about in that day that I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; all who lift it will be severely injured. And all the nations of the earth will be gathered against it.

Luke 21:20-22 (NASB)
20 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that her desolation is near.
21 “Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of the city must leave, and those who are in the country must not enter the city;
22 because these are days of vengeance, so that all things which are written will be fulfilled.

Israel and Judea have previously been separate since the end of the rule of Solomon.  Israel, with most of the 10 tribes, was carried into captivity by the Assyrians while Judea maintained its separate national identity, surviving an attack by the Assyrians, surviving subjugation and captivity by the Babylonians , the Persians, the Greeks until finally in 70 CE the Romans destroyed the city of Jerusalem and the Temple and exiled the Jewish people, dissolving the nation of Judea.

The 1948 announcement of a modern Jewish nation excluded the territory of Judea per the instructions of the United Nations which intended this territory to be forever Arab.  In 1967 as a result of the six days war, Judea was reunited with the nation of Israel as well as Jerusalem.  This has been a bone in the throat of the international community since that day.  The flouting of the International will has been unbearable for many members of the United Nations community.
